Profile

Dr Alex Brazier has led teams through two of the most demanding environments on earth: the frozen expanse of Antarctica and the intensity of frontline critical care. A Guinness World Record–holding polar explorer and award-winning doctor, he brings rare lived experience of physical, mental, and emotional endurance.

At 26, Alex became the youngest person ever to complete an unsupported coast-to-coast ski crossing of Antarctica — a 1,100-mile journey fewer people have completed than have walked on the moon.

As part of the SPEAR17 expedition, he and five Army Reservists honoured the legacy of Lt Col Henry Worsley MBE by completing the route Worsley never finished. Over 67 days they hauled 120 kg sledges in –45°C temperatures, endured whiteouts and crevasses, and pushed through exhaustion to become the first British team to traverse the continent. The next morning, he entered the Antarctic Marathon in borrowed kit and finished fourth.

Back in the UK, Alex works in anaesthetics and intensive care, leading resuscitation and trauma teams. During the first wave of COVID-19, he stepped up to a senior role in intensive care at a major London hospital, caring for around twenty unconscious ventilated patients each night with only a junior doctor beside him as the pandemic overwhelmed capacity. He describes it as “the most emotionally and physically demanding leadership test of my life.”

Through these dual worlds of polar exploration and critical care, Alex offers a grounded message: when everything is stripped back, resilience comes down to perspective, preparation, and connection.
